LEWIS HINE
Occupational portraits once more.. my never ending fascination workwear is matched by an inerest in the endless variety of regional costumes, particularly of nineteenth century Europe, as seen in previous posts.
Lewis Hine captured both groups beautifully and I found some images I hadn't seen before in the New York City Library collection today. Hine took hundreds of portraits of newly arrived immigrants at Ellis Island, as well as having been commissioned as the photographer for the National Research Project of the Works Projects Administration, which I need to find out more about.
